Tony Soprano in The Test Dream, Season 5 Episode 11 of The Sopranos

The Test Dream Explained: Tony Soprano's Strangest Dream

Mobsters Daily

"The Test Dream" is the strangest episode of The Sopranos — an entire hour inside Tony's sleeping mind, the night before he has to murder his own cousin. A high school test, a dinner with a dead boss, a movie star in his bed, and his teeth falling out: every piece is Tony's guilt and fear, translated into images he cannot escape.

The Coach and the Test

The dream opens with Tony back in high school, late for a test he never prepared for, being scolded by his old football coach, Coach Molinaro. The test is the episode's central image, and it is not subtle: the next morning, Tony has to kill Tony Blundetto, his cousin, to save the family from a war with New York. He has been avoiding the decision for weeks. The dream is his mind staging the thing he cannot face — a test he cannot pass, judged by a man who once believed in him.

Dinner With Carmine

At the dream's center is a dinner at the home of Carmine Lupertazzi Sr., the old New York boss who died earlier in the season. Carmine is alive again, holding court, and Tony is a guest at his table — a son at the table of a father who is already dead. Carmine represents the old rules, the world of bosses who settled things with sitdowns instead of body counts, and Tony knows that world is gone. He is eating dinner with a ghost because the rules that ghost lived by are ghosts too.

The dinner is also where Annette Bening appears, sitting at the table as if she belongs there — Tony's fantasy of a different life, and the dream admitting what Tony never will awake: he wanted out, and chose not to leave.

Annette Bening and the Teeth

Then the teeth start falling out — the oldest anxiety-dream image there is. The mouth that has talked its way out of everything is literally coming apart. Paired with the test he cannot pass and the dinner he cannot leave, the teeth are the dream's verdict: Tony is falling apart, and he knows it.

Dreams are the show's other language — our explainer on the talking fish dream covers the vision where Big Pussy first appeared, and our guide to Kevin Finnerty covers the coma dream that nearly killed him.

What the Dream Tells Us About Tony

"The Test Dream" is the episode where the show stops pretending Tony's therapy is working. Dr. Melfi has spent five seasons helping him name his feelings, and the dream is what those feelings look like: a test, a dead boss, a movie star, and teeth in his hand. The morning after, Tony kills Tony B. The test was never about whether he could do it. It was about whether he could live with doing it — and the answer, then as ever, was that he would do it anyway.
